The
Mother of Father's Day!
Sonora Louise Smart Dodd.
In the early 1900's, Sonora dreamed of honoring her father who raised 6 children alone following the death of his wife.

Sonora worked through her church and the YMCA to shine the light on fathers everywhere.  For over 50 years (wow!) Sonora wrote letters to urge the government to officially recognize a day for fathers at the same national level as Mother's Day.

until 1972 that a permanent holiday was passed into law by then President Nixon.  Sonora passed away in 1978 at the age of 96 and happily was able to see her hard work realized.
